Urban Quarters
It was generally agreed during the consultation workshops in May 2004, that it is useful to think of Ryde town centre as a series of distinct urban quarters each with its own physical, social and economic characteristics and its own opportunities for improvement. These are:
* The Upper High Street
* The High Street
* Union Street and St. Thomas’s Square
* Ryde Esplanade ( subject of the previous study, Ryde Esplanade Comprehensive Development and Improvement Plan).
Enhancing the public realm in these four areas forms the basis of this strategy and should be the priority for early implementation. However, supporting initiatives for the
surrounding areas are also set out and can be implemented as funds become available. The individual sites are referenced on Strategy Plans 1 to 3 and a detailed description of issues and opportunities relating to each site is set out in Appendix A.
